With the Reds out of the playoff picture, Burns is having his workload limited to close out his first full season in the majors, as he's already blown his previous career high in innings out of the water with 154.1 IP this year. The 23-year-old righty has tossed exactly three frames in all three of his September outings, posting a 4.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB in those nine innings. He'll make one more trip to the mound in 2026, a start scheduled to come on the road next week in Atlanta.

Burns was held to 56 pitches as the Reds continue to limit the young right-hander's workload down the stretch. Both of the runs charged to Burns came on a Joey Ortiz homer in the second inning, the 16th long ball he's given up this season. Overall, Burns' ERA now sits at 2.80 across 28 starts (151.1 innings) this year with a 1.15 WHIP and 181:54 K:BB. He's tentatively in line to face the Cubs at home his next time out.

Burns' workload is being curtailed late in the season. He threw just 44 pitches (26 strikes) in this contest, and similar pitch counts can be expected for the remainder of his starts. Unless he moves to the back half of a piggyback situation, it will be virtually impossible for him to work deep enough to qualify for wins. Burns is at a 2.73 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 176:51 K:BB through 148.1 innings over 27 starts this year. He is expected to work in tandem with Brandon Williamson again over the weekend in Milwaukee.

Manager Terry Francona said that Burns won't make his next start until Sept. 7 against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, and the Reds intend to monitor his innings and pitch counts for the remainder of the season, Joe Danneman of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Though he had no formal restrictions in place over his first 26 starts of the season, Burns will have his workload managed the rest of the way since he's already amassed 145.1 innings in 2026, surpassing his 2025 total by more than 30 innings. More specifically, Francona mentioned that he plans to have Brandon Williamson (shoulder) -- who is set to return from the 60-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Padres -- piggyback the 23-year-old Burns whenever the latter's turn in the rotation comes up in September. With a 65-72 record, the Reds are well removed from the wild-card picture, so ensuring the long-term health of their young ace will take on added import over the final month of a non-contending season.
