Leahy (10-5) took the loss Friday against the Nationals after allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out one over three innings.

Leahy hasn't pitched more than three innings in any of his last four starts, but the seven runs he allowed Wednesday were a season-worst output for the 29-year-old right-hander. As a result, his ERA jumped to 3.65 as St. Louis was mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. Leahy, who owns a 9.26 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over his last four starts, is expected to make his final start of the season against the Pirates on the road next Thursday.

Leahy allowed two hits and struck out four without walking a batter over three scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Saturday.

Leahy provided good work in another short start, throwing 26 of 38 pitches for strikes. His pitch count continues to come down as part of his workload management in September, and that will make it nearly impossible for him to collect wins unless he moves to bulk relief. Through 28 starts this year, Leahy has a 3.33 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 128:38 K:BB over 135 innings. He is tentatively projected to work in tandem with Cooper Hjerpe again at home versus the Nationals in his next outing.

Leahy has seen a planned workload reduction since mid-August, but this was the first time he's had a truly bad outing in a while. Prior to Sunday, he hadn't given up more than two runs in any game since June 17 versus the Padres. Leahy is now at a 3.41 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 124:38 K:BB through 132 innings over 27 starts. The right-hander will be tough to trust in fantasy if he continues to work as a starter, which will reduce his chances to pick up wins in September. His next appearance is projected to be at home versus the White Sox.

Leahy didn't factor into the decision Saturday as the Cardinals fell 6-2 to the Pirates, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over three innings. He struck out three.

The only blemish on the right-hander's line came via a Brandon Lowe solo shot in the first inning. Leahy was limited to 51 pitches (32 strikes) as St. Louis keeps a close eye on his workload, and he hasn't completed five innings in either of his last two starts. Despite a 1.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 43:5 K:BB in 40 innings since the All-Star break, Leahy's fantasy value will be capped if he isn't allowed to last long enough to qualify for a win. He lines up to make his next start on the road next weekend against the Rockies.
